why not? / why?
Oct. 14th, 2006 07:01 pm"why not?" school of decision making
"Why not?" denotes an absence of will & intentionality;
the presence of absence; governance by the arbitrary.
Decisions undertaken in this way (ie not properly
undertaken at all) lack necessity. Any action, necessary
or otherwise, generates repercussions. If the action
is necessary, we can usually handle the repercussions.
The Law of Unintended Consequences suggests that
repercussions proliferate beyond what we are able to
anticipate; and if our action is unnecessary, the
consequences may well sweep us away.
What is necessary is possible;
What is optional is expensive;
What is unnecessary is unlikely.
If we undertake a "why?" decision, our life is also
on the line: but the right line. If I take a decision
to act, do I have the executive skills to discharge the
functional aspect involved? In this particular case,
do I have (at least) the competence to write the book?
Is this to be a list of data, facts & occurrences?
(I note again that publicly available info is often
inaccurate while a lot of useful info is not available
and, most likely in the lifetimes of several characters
involved, will not be). Do I have the capacity to make
judgements, assessments, finely-balanced considerations?
Do I have the integrity to honour the subject/object of my concern?
