The performer is particularly vulnerable when:

1. They are tuning;
2. They are about to go onstage.

When tuning an instrument, a performer is tuning themself.
This is part of the performer's preparation. When about to go onstage,
the performer is (let us assume) prepared. Both points are liminal & at both
the performer is vulnerable & this vulnerability is instinctively sensed by
anyone who wants to attack them. One form of attack, not often recognised
as such, is the demand for attention.
